The OLPC project, a radical change in the way of thinking computers
Laptop has changed very few from several years. Each new laptop just improved power and capacity from the previous one. So each new operating system spent this power, most often without lot of interest for the user. The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is a radical change to this way of thinking computers and launched the netbook wave. The OLPC project is the answer to a single question: build a laptop with features, ergonomy and cost matching exactly to the user’s need.
So, the OLPC project has broke lot of concepts in computers:
- User: a laptop for children, aim to the poorest countries,
- Technology: sunlight readable screen, Wifi mesh network,
- Green: low consumption, non toxic, 5 years lifetime,
- Usage: education,
- Economic: 100$ laptop, build by a non profit association, based only on Open Source solutions.
This conference will teach you the philosophy and all innovations of the OLPC project and will compare it to our current vision of computers.
