USI 2010 Session
How the web was won, and other useful stories
Ten years ago, the web was in danger. It was in danger of becoming less like the engine of creativity and wealth we know today -- and more like television.
Luckily, 10,000s of volunteers banded together to confront this danger by building software like Firefox, Apache and Linux. Drawing on the core principles of the web - openness and participation - they helped move the internet marketplace back towards choice, innovation and standards. This kind of 'web thinking' is driving similar transformations in education, media, government -- everywhere.
This keynote will tell the story of how the web was won, and what we need to do now to ensure the open nature of the internet lasts well into the future. It will also explore how tech leaders can use the principles of openness and participation to transform their organizations.
